Be who you are, not what you are. There are so many ways we can categorize ourselves, and ways in which the world, and the people in it, can try to categorize us. Gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, political leanings, family dynamic, location, profession all conspire to place us into little boxes, so people can comfortably define for themselves "who we are." I prefer to think of myself as a person first, and allow all those other things to inform who I am, but not dictate who I am, and how the world perceives me. Be who you are. That's all I have to say. Of course, the work can then become finding who that is.
