The wedding was wonderful. Leslie looked incredible, in the dress she's had waiting for years, waiting for what she knew would come. And so at age 50, she begins the second half of her life with the man she loves. In a "new year," and in this time of renewal, and the casting off our sins. At the end of the ceremony, Alan broke a glass under his foot, as we did at our ceremony almost four years ago. One week to the day after Leslie's mother had died. And the judge talked about the symbolism of the glass, as our officiant had, and I though once again of how sorrow and joy walk in tandem.
And I looked around the room...at Suzi, who spoke of how being able to play music was the only thing that has kept her sane since her mother's recent death. Her mother, who she did her damndest to keep alive this past year-and-a-half. RV-ing across the country, and tap dancing, and researching any and every alternative possible.
And at Steffi, who, out of the ruins of her marriage, has managed to raise two amazing children.
And Chris, who lost his best friend in the World Trade Center, and who, G-d willing, will be a father by this time next year.
And at Rhonda, and Susan, and Lyn...three strong women (hey, sounds like the title of a play), each in a different phase of her life, whom I adore.
Here, in the midst of certainty and uncertainty, in joy and sorrow, we still manage to dance.
